Free & Easy Turns 20 Today!

‘Free & Easy’ — our first independently released CD album— dropped 20 years ago today!

There are so many stories I could share, but let’s start at the beginning.

The first time I heard the demo of “Love Survives” was in Ryan’s home studio, the very first time he invited me over. He had mentioned in an interview on my radio show that he was starting some new music after the release of ‘Flux’ — pieces he wasn’t sure would have vocals, or even be part of Love Spirals Downwards.

Collaborating with a few local musicians, this new material leaned in a jazzier — even funkier — direction. Though still more of a sketch than a song, I knew it was something special.

“Sandcastles” Official Music Video

Enjoy this new video for “Sandcastles,” the epic closing track to Lovespirals’ album, ‘Free and Easy.’ Enjoy two gorgeous sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, shot at the pristine So Cal beach, Crystal Cove. The first sunset was shot from down on the beach, while the second one was filmed from up on the bluff. The second sunset is the most amazing technicolor sky Anji and Ryan have ever experienced, and it really brings the gospel like chorus and electric guitar solo of the end 3rd of this song to life!

Hand in Hand #1 on Below Zero Radio Charts

It seems that Lovespirals’ 2005 single, “Hand in Hand,” from sophomore album, Free & Easy, has found a new audience on the Below Zero radio show. The band are currently featured on the front page of the official show site with a very nice writeup. Apparently the track has been steadily climbing their charts over the past month, since DJ Mason Rothert discovered and dusted off this “timeless gem,” as they so generously called it.

Lovespirals have quietly started their own revolution in the world of chillout and carved their own style out with their three albums. From the dreamy folk and rock sounds of  Windblown Kiss (2002) to the more soulful jazz and blues of Free & Easy (2005) they come full circle with Long Way From Home, which is back to the dream pop roots.

While Anji Bee sings her sad lyrics with a voice that tucks you in at night, Ryan Lum masterfully produces melancholic music. These two have been at it for nearly a decade and their hard work is really paying off. They have worked very hard in the digital music revolution as well as podcasting with Anji Bee’s chillcast shows. Anji is known as “the sexiest voice in podcasting” and she has made everyone at Below Zero freeze over which is a good thing in the world of chill.

Lovespirals track, “Hand in Hand” from their release Free & Easy has made a comeback for us at Below Zero. When we went back and listened to this song we had to bring it out as it is a timeless gem. We are happy it reached #1 on our TOP 10 list after a four week climb.

As an interesting sidenote, “Hand in Hand” was originally recorded as an extended Jazz Step Drum n Bass track in 1999, making it the second song ever produced by Lovespirals. It was first pressed to acetate for Ryan’s DJ sets, then uploaded to mp3.com, and eventually included on the digital-only Ecstatic EP in 2001. This early mix was featured in an official Mp3.com Best Song of the Week contest and was included on the Chill Out Lounge 2 compilation alongside D&B master, LTJ Bukem. The Ecstatic EP itself was spotlighted as a Hot Pick on mp3.com (“for fans of Good Looking Records“), and listed in StarVox’s Top 10 of 2001, hailing it’s “tasty illbient and Trip Hop influenced grooves” as a “harbinger of Goth’s next Big Thing.”

You can download and compare both versions of “Hand in Hand” from Lovespirals’ Amie Street store. For CD purists, pick up a copy of Free & Easy from the band store to have it autographed by Ryan and Anji just for you!

Music Tap interview with Ryan & Anji of Lovespirals

March 13, 2006: Music Tap by Matt Rowe

“Honey and Cool Jazz ‘n’ Rock: An interview with Ryan Lum and Anji Bee of Lovespirals”

Matt: Ryan – Anji’s voice is hauntingly memorable; her voice sticks in my mind long after I heard the songs. Are you as hypnotized by her ability to mesh with your vision of how Lovespirals songs should be communicated as we are hearing it?

Ryan: Yeah, it’s surprising how her voice just fits perfectly. I’m very lucky. Her voice has been as important as anything in the evolution of our music together.

Matt: Anji, obviously you are an excellent fit with Lovespirals. The forward progression of the band incorporates you better than many bands undergoing a shift in style. How do you feel your involvement with Lovespirals changes the band? Have you brought your own influences into the structure of the band’s musical vision?

Anji: It would be impossible for me not to bring my own influences into the band, since we are a collaborative team. I think I bring an earthier element to the music. My vocals are very lyrically based, as opposed to Suzanne’s more non-verbal stylings, and my sound is more soulful compared to her purely ethereal sound.

Lovespirals’ Free & Easy in Jazz Review

Sheldon T. Nunn reviews Free & Easy

Lovespirals’ latest CD entitled, Free & Easy, continues a formula that has made the duo a recognizable force in smooth jazz arenas; however, much of their music cannot be classified under one umbrella or style. Collectively, Ryan and Anji can be surprisingly creative and inventive, especially on this latest release. One of the more promising components of Free & Easy is that is commercially viable. On previous efforts, Lovespirals have taken an eclectic approach to jazz, which has often left them lacking widespread appeal. Historically, they have drawn upon world, house, light and airy music to make their presence known, which has created a highly evolved level of crossover appeal.

With Ryan serving up a heaping helping of guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion and programming, Anji takes on the tasks of vocals and vocal arrangements. As independent artists and without the support of a major record label, the two have recorded Free & Easy on their own Chillcuts Label, which has given them the freedom and flexibility to be more adventuresome and creative.

Free & Easy is an album that pushes the envelope of enthused imaginative thought processes. Tracks such as “Trouble” and “Deep In My Soul” provide a dance feel, while a more laid back appeal occurs on tracks that include “Walk Away” and “Love Survives.” In the end, what comes together are nine tracks of nicely-crafted music. Anji and Ryan cover the gamut of pop melodies, R&B infused grooves as well as pop-oriented licks to make Free & Easy a good bet to chart on Internet radio stations, which is where much of Lovespirals’ popularity resides. Given a broader range of discovery commercially, Anji Bee and Ryan Lum are sure to not only surprise listeners, they will generate a cadre of new fans.

Amazon Disadvantage

Man, finally someone with some sense responded to my email at Amazon! After several weeks of frustration, we’ve gotten through to their customer service the fact that we do, in fact, have an account with them, and we do, in fact, have an active title listed on their site, and they have not, in fact, placed an order for copies. The release date is next week, so it would be nice if they actually had some stock on hand to fulfill orders. Other sites are already linking to the Amazon.com page for Free and Easy, like Live365 and AMG, so it would be great if folks could actually place the order, rather than just read about the CD. Ugh. I guess this is the really fun part of starting a label, huh?

Free & Easy CD Liner Notes

In the sprit of old jazz, blues, and bossa nova records, we thought we’d include a description of the album on the back cover of the CD written in that type of style. Here is the text:

Lovespirals are the very sound of life’s earthly joys and sorrows. Anji Bee’s voice shifts from little girl purity to breathy sensuality, then ascends gracefully to angelic heights, while Ryan Lum’s soulful electric guitar and groovy Rhodes piano weave tantalizing patterns of melodious harmony. Combining jazz, soul, and rock with modern electronica styles, Free & Easy lives up to it’s name in the genre-specific world of today’s music. In a time of rampant overproduction, Lovespirals bring organic sounds and old time song styling back into focus. No auto-tune was used in this recording, baby! Realizing the best of digital audio’s promise while preserving the heart and soul of their music is what Lovespirals do best; creating a smooth as silk hi-fidelity stereophonic sound. So sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy, as Anji and Ryan soothe your soul…
