Absynth Reviews “Secrets” Single

Music writer Karl Magi posted a lovely review of the duo’s latest single, “Secrets,” on the Absynth site. It reads, in part:

Lovespirals’ “Secrets” explores complexity and hurt within relationships. The song commences with levitating guitar strumming as Anji Lum’s whispery voice traces wordlessly through the music. Soon she begins to sing, her airy, fragile tones drifting smoothly while carrying a melody that mingles ache with approaching loss. The guitar returns as hushed drums brush softly across the track, the bass adding lush underpinnings beneath the delicate strumming. A floating synth moves through the music with disembodied grace…

Secrets Single Out Now

The band’s second single of 2026, “Secrets,” finds them turning inward, embracing a hushed, late-night chillout atmosphere shaped as much by restraint as by confession. Written and produced by husband-and-wife duo Ryan and Anji Lum, the track leans away from guitar-led dynamics in favor of moody synthesizers, understated keyboard lines, and contemporary electronic beats — subtly shifting the emotional contour of the songwriting.

That approach echoes the duo’s 2010 album ‘Future Past,’ which AllMusic Guide famously described as “essentially a slinky soul album for the 21st century,” noting its balance between shoegaze texture and classic ’70s quiet storm warmth. At the time, Ryan described having “two brains” when writing — a guitar brain and a keyboard brain — observing that composing on keys led songs to unfold differently. On “Secrets,” that keyboard-driven mindset returns, allowing the arrangement to unfold patiently and leave space for tension and unresolved feeling.

Anji’s lyrics confront the quiet damage caused by withholding truth, moving from regret toward self-recognition. Delivered in a close, subdued vocal, lines like “Should’ve been more honest / Should’ve spoke my mind” feel unguarded and immediate, while the recurring question — “Are you keeping secrets again?” — circles like an echo of doubt that refuses to fade.

Following the muted exhaustion of “Gray,” Secrets feels less like catharsis than awareness — an acknowledgment of what was left unsaid, and the cost of carrying it alone.

“Secrets” is available now on SpotifyApple MusicAmazon Music, YouTube Music and other streaming platforms under the original band name, Love Spirals Downwards, as well as on Bandcamp under both LSD and Lovespirals.

Gray Music Video Out Now

“Gray” marks Lovespirals first release of 2026, opening the year on a hushed, introspective note with a moody new single and music video. Created by Anji using archival personal footage, the video illustrates the song’s emotional terrain through largely monochromatic recurring imagery: dark tunnel, atmospheric clouds, a flock of birds taking flight from a wintry tree, and Anji slowly traversing sun dappled terrain looking pensive.

This muted visual palette is momentarily broken during the bridge, where the screen bursts into vibrant color to match a sudden surge of memory: “Once there was a time, I swear I knew / Golden light and skies of endless blue / Laughter like a spark that lit the way…” This fleeting warmth provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding footage before the film fades back to a somber monotone, returning to the stillness of the present as Anji intones the finality of the title: “But now it’s only gray.”

The “Gray” music video debuted on January 21st, following the single’s digital release on January 16th. It serves as a haunting visual companion to the track’s exploration of memory and emotional stasis.

Karl Magi Reviews “Without You”

SynthWriter80s posted a review of Lovespirals’ latest single on his HubPage devoted to synth music. It reads in part:

“The song opens with Ryan Lum’s guitar ringing with soothing smoothness and Anji Bee’s voice wrapping around me like a satin sheet. The beat is elegantly smooth… while the guitar echoes with chilled-out vibes. Anji Bee’s voice moves like smooth chocolate, flowing through the music as the trumpet in the distance exhales with a jazzy, emotive tone. The chorus brings lusciousness and sensuality … while the velvety melody unfolds. As the song drifts to an end, it is filled with the intensity of desire and wanting within the lyrics, while the keys and guitar create heartfelt feeling.”

Lovespirals Without You Single Out Now

Lovespirals’ “Without You” is a lush, soul-baring ballad that blends Ryan and Anji Lum’s signature dream pop core with classic neo-soul vibes. Built upon a smooth foundation of acoustic and electric piano, the track is enriched by emotive strings and understatedly expressive guitar work. Ryan explores intricate chord voicings—extended harmonies like spacious ninths and fragile half-diminished chords—that mirror the push and pull between longing and reassurance. Weaving effortlessly through the instrumentation, Anji’s vocals are a captivating blend of rich, soulful natural low tones and shimmering high harmonies, delivering warmth and delicate vulnerability.

Though released under the revived Love Spirals Downwards moniker, “Without You” feels like a heartfelt return to form for Lovespirals, echoing the warm, soulful textures that defined their 2000s-era chillout sound. The release coincides with the 20th anniversary of Free & Easy (2005), the album that first crystallized the Lums’ seamless fusion of dream pop, soul, and downtempo elegance. Its sonic lineage extends through the bittersweet R&B feel of “Life Goes On” (2018) and “Why Not Today” (2023), as well as the duo’s forays into jazzy downtempo and electronica on Anji Bee’s 2013 album, Love Me Leave Me.

Nothing Even Matters Anymore Single & Video

Lovespirals dropped their latest single a week early exclusively for Bandcamp Friday, but the official release date is today, September 12th, on all streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.

A haunting blend of gothic-tinged dream pop and atmospheric chill, “Nothing Even Matters Anymore” moves from hushed resignation to soaring catharsis. Anji’s luminous vocal harmonies and Ryan’s ethereal guitar weave a melancholic sound ideal for late-night reflection.

“Glittering” Single & Video Out Now

Lovespirals “Glittering” marks a shimmering return to chillout, channeling the hypnotic allure of millennial downtempo electronica through the band’s distinctive brand of dream pop. Built around a haunting piano motif, the track gradually unfolds into a sophisticated contemplation of beauty and illusion.

Anji Lum’s enchanting vocal interplay, characterized ever so slightly jazzy and low-lit phrasing layered with ethereal, witchy harmonies, imbues the song with a seductive yet cautionary aura. Her lyrics flicker between allure and regret, casting love as something dazzling but deceptive:

“Catching feelings / Fell for the flash / Foolish emotions / Now turned to ash.”

Ryan Lum’s signature fusion of electric and acoustic guitar is elegantly woven over a laid-back electronica groove, striking a harmonious balance between earthy tones and atmospheric ambiance. His Big Muff-soaked solo recalls the expressive restraint of Pink Floyd, culminating in a radiantly anachronistic climax—at once nostalgic and fresh.

Wrapped in a soulful, vintage-inspired rhythm and adorned with sparkling ambient touches, “Glittering” serves as both a loving nod to the duo’s past and a subtle reinvention. It invites listeners to lose themselves in the glow, even as it gently reminding them of the adage:

“All that glitters is not gold.”

“Glittering” is available now on SpotifyApple MusicAmazon Music, YouTube Music and other streaming platforms under the original band name, Love Spirals Downwards, as well as on Bandcamp under both LSD and Lovespirals.

“Okay” Reviewed by Karl Magi on HubPages

Lovely to see another review by Karl Magi aka SynthWriter80s, this time of our new single, “Okay.” It reads, in part:

Lambent guitar notes ring while the spoken word segment trembles with distant melancholy. The way Anji Bee captures the emotion in the words is deeply touching as her emotive voice calls out with vulnerability. The drums and bass throb slowly beneath her as a flaring synth hovers and the wobbling guitar shifts uneasily.

Okay Single & Lyrics Video Out Now

Following the simmering defiance of “Boss Mode,” Lovespirals return with “Okay”— a slow-burning meditation on emotional exhaustion and disconnection, enveloped in a soundscape that seamlessly blends sensual modern R&B grooves with lush dream pop melancholy. Ryan Lum’s signature production style, characterized by ethereal guitar flourishes, emotive ebow leads, and haunting touches of acoustic guitar woven through sparkling synths and contemporary beats, sets the stage for Anji Lum’s soulful, natural-toned lead and airy high harmonies that gracefully drift above the mix. “Okay” further expands the lyrical and sonic universe that Anji and Ryan have been constructing—a realm of whispered truths, shadowed beauty, and the poignant space between our emotions and our words.

“Okay” is available now on Spotify, Apple MusicAmazon Music, YouTube Music and other streaming platforms under the original band name, Love Spirals Downwards, as well as on Bandcamp under both LSD and Lovespirals.

“Boss Mode” Single & Lyrics Video Out Now

A silky-smooth blend of soulful downtempo and introspective pop, “Boss Mode” pairs Anji’s soul-baring lyricism and sultry vocal delivery with Ryan’s signature dream pop guitar textures and sleek electronica production. With moody keyboards, crisp beats and soulful guitar flourishes, the song finds strength in vulnerability, drawing emotional resonance from the language of gaming culture—“like boss mode, low health, no refill”—as a metaphor for emotional burnout.

Marking a shift from the darker emotional tones of recent singles like  “Not Myself” and “Noumenon,” “Boss Mode” calls back to the bittersweet soulfulness of “Why Not Today” and the melodic warmth of “Life Goes On,” while carving out its own space with a confident groove and glimmers of hope. The result is a track that straddles introspective pop and downtempo electronica, inviting listeners to power through life’s harder moments with grace and groove.

“Boss Mode” is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and other streaming platforms under the band’s original name, Love Spirals Downwards, as well as on Bandcamp under both LSD and Lovespirals.
